SNOW SNOW SNOW!
SNOW SNOW SNOW! So yesterday I saw the first real snow of the season!! (come on, the snow on November 21 wasnt real snow it melted all before noon!) I was walking out of Lobby 7 after spending the afternoon teaching my last SAT class of the semester, and I suddenly saw specks of white fall from the sky. I asked myselfis that SNOW? And then I felt some white flurry specks of coldness brush my cheeks, and Im like, WOW IT REALLY IS SNOW! Haha, I guess this is what happens when you come from a tropical country where it never snows. :) On a equally festive note, my dorm, iHouse, had a holiday dinner on Saturday night! (Were supposed to have a Thanksgiving Dinner, like most of the other dorms, but it was postponed so it became more of a Christmas dinner): We had a truly international dinner. We had entrees represented from Japan (miso soup), China (garlic noodles), Puerto Rico (rice dish), India (vegetable korma), US (roast chicken), as well as desserts represented from US (pumpkin and apple pie), China (almond tofu), and as well as my critically-acclaimed Taiwanese azuki bean soup w/ rice balls /shameless plug . Hey, were supposed to be International House, after all! =D Afterwards, we also had a gift exchange. We were really happy with our gifts: I got a gift card to Boston Tea Stop (the closest bubble tea shop from MIT in Harvard Square) from my Secret Santa :) On a completely unrelated note, freshman generally have to take two Physics courses to fulfill the Physics GIR (General Institute Requirements). (Dont you love my abrupt transition?) Generally, these two Physics courses are 8.01 (Newtonian Mechanics fall semester) and 8.02 (Electricity and Magnetism spring semester). Unless you want to be amazing and take 8.012 or 8.022 (Physics For The Truly Insane), you will inevitably encounter TEAL. TEAL is MITs affectionate synonym for Technology-Enabled Active Leaning and basically involves students learning from Powerpoint presentations of the lecture while toting white clickers that submit their responses to multiple-choice concept questions scattered in the lecture slides to the instructor allowing the instructor to determine immediately the level of student learning [and participation, as those students who are falling asleep cannot effectively click their clickers ;)]. Aside from the technologically-enhanced lectures, another complement to TEAL is that students must submit weekly assignments online through a site called Mastering Physics. The online assignments involve answering physics problems and entering numerical or variable answers through a real-time system that immediately assesses the answer and provides hints if the student does not know how to approach the problem or enters the wrong answer. Since everything is done online, homework can now be due late at night, or on weekends. For 8.01, there are 2 assignments weekly that must be submitted before 11:30 PM on Thursday and 8:30 PM on Sunday. One of the biggest drawbacks to this system is that everything is computerized, and if you miss the deadline by even ONE SECOND, you get a zero for all the problems that you didnt submit before the deadline. So my roommate Zach and I suddenly remembered that we had a Mastering Physics assignment due last night at 8:10, and this was basically the ruckus that ensued: Disclaimer: This does NOT happen on a daily basis. =p 8:10 Zach: Do we have a Mastering Physics assignment due today? Me: Crap, youre right!! *logs on and attempts the questions* *everything is fine, until 3 minutes before the deadline* 8:27 Me: Three more minutes! What do you still have? Zach: The reading question and the one on escape velocity. Me: Me too! Dude, did you read the chapter? Zach: I dont remember any of it! Me: Me neither! Dude, wheres my book?! *retrieves the Physics book from some corner in the room* Me: Uhh, the chapter is about Keplers Laws of Gravitation. Zach: Oh! Thats easy! *scribbles something into the reading question* Me: *writes* I found this chapter to be pretty confusing because Keplers third law is confusing .. 8:28:30 Me: One and a half minutes! Zach: Lets see the escape velocity questionoh crap! It has like seven parts! Me: *clicks in* AHHH. Zach: *reads* The key to making a concise mathematicalblah blahfind the mechanical energy of a object blah blah blahassume gravitational potential energy is zero at large distances. I dont know what this is! What are you doing? Me: Im doing the multiple choice! Yes, yes, no, yes, no.YESS Im getting all of these right without reading the questions! Its crazy! Zach: ARGG ok Ill go and do those as well! 8:29:30 Me: AHHH THIRTY SECONDS. What is the formula for escape velocity?! Zach: AHHH its something to do with the square root of something!! Me: AHHH FIFTEEN SECONDS! Stop doing what youre doing! Press submit!! Press submit!! Theyll give credit for the questions that we at least answered!! *frantically presses Submit Item* Zach: Im pressing it!! Im pressing it!! AHHH Cannot submit homework when there are incomplete parts!! *bursts out laughing* Me: AHHH OK I FOUND THE ESCAPE VELOCITY ITS THE SQUARE ROOT OF 8:30:00 Together: AHHH IT EXPIRED!! Diffusion Examples Diffusion Diffusion is the spreading of a substance from one point of concentration to a lesser concentrated point. Anything can diffuse, from the tiniest molecules to an entire population. Scientifically, though, the term diffusion refers to particles of some size or nature that spread out in liquid, gas, or air. The term "concentration gradient" is also important when talking about diffusion, since it explains why diffusion occurs. Substances naturally flow into areas where there is a lower concentration of their substance in order to have more room to move. Examples of Diffusion: 1. Observable Diffusion Some substances are easy to observe through diffusion, such as a drop of food coloring in a cup of water, or a spritz of perfume filling the air. Some diffusion is a fast process, and sometimes the diffusion is present but much less noticeable due to variations in temperature; a tea bag dropped in a cup of hot water will diffuse much faster and change the water's color quickly, whereas that same tea bag dropped in a cup of cold water will take longer to diffuse noticeably. 2. Heat Conduction Heat conduction, the process by which heat transfers between two objects, is actually an example of diffusion. In conduction, the heat energy always moves from an area of high temperature to an area of low temperature. This can be seen as moving from a high concentration to low concentration, which occurs in diffusion. 3. Lattice Model In chemistry, the lattice model for diffusion is used to explain how atoms move through a crystalline lattice structure. These objects move about through the lattice by one of several different types of diffusion, but basically they can jump from point to point through the crystalline structure into areas of lower concentration. 4. Alloy Production Alloys are formed when two or more types of metal are combined to form a new substance. For example, steel is formed when iron, carbon, aluminum, and other trace metals are combined. Once these metals come together, they are not easily separated. Diffusion occurs when the particles of the components spread out and combine from areas of high concentration to lower concentration. 5. Flat Soda and Pasta Diffusion occurs in the kitchen as well. Upon opening a bottle of soda, the CO2 that forms the bubbly effect begins to disperse into the surrounding air. If left open, the bottle of soda will become flat; even if the bottle is closed, over time the CO2 will diffuse out through the unsealed bottle cap. Diffusion also occurs when cooking pasta, as the boiling water diffuses into the dried noodles, rehydrating them and making them plumper and saturated.

As poor risk management can lead to an astonishing disaster like this, it appears to be necessary for every business to learn from BPââ¬â¢s mistakes and try the best to prevent such disaster from happening again. This report studies this case, focusing on two issues identified in BPââ¬â¢s risk management practices, namely its sloppy preparation for risks and its inappropriate communication strategy after the crisis happened. In general, having Bipolar Disorder is like living at your best and you are worst and having no control over it. People may refer to bipolar are manic depressive disorder, this is due to for the individuals having periods of mania, and periods of depression. Bipolar is derived from having two moods, hence mania and depression. Mania is a period of energy, individuals will feel energized, on top of the world and may even experience sleep deprivation. Sometime later, the energy goes away, and depression will set it. Depression is where the individual will be at their lowest, become suicidal and struggle to be productive in various places such as school, work, relationships, and carry out every day activities (Roberts). I have chosen to pick this topic because 2 out of 5 people in my household family have bipolar, and now I, myself am starting to show signs of having bipolar disorder. Living with someone who has bipolar that isnââ¬â¢t managed is very difficult and scary. My sister, w ho is the person behind me picking this disorder has struggled all her life since 7th grade, so 16 years later, she is still struggling to be manageable and not have as severe ups and downs. In December of 1990, an extremist newspaper prints ââ¬Å"The Hutu Ten Commandmentsâ⬠which show the extreme hatred that the Hutu people had for the Tutsis. From that time on, the slaughtering of Tutsis continued, but there was pressure from many different countries for Habyarimana to make peace with the RPF and the Tutsi people. In 1993, there was a meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania with the hope of bringing peace to all; this was when the ââ¬Å"Arusha Accordâ⬠was established. The ââ¬Å"Arusha Accordâ⬠officially states that the war is over and that the remaining Tutsi refugees may return to Rwanda. The UN is called in to make sure that everything is carried out smoothly and they appoint a chapter 6 peace keeping force, UNIMAR, to see that out. On the 6th of April, 1994, the airplane carrying President Habyarimana and the President of Burundi, Cyprien Ntaryamira, was shot down. Both Presidents were killed. This marked the end of negotiations for peace and, to put it lightly, all hell broke loose in Rwanda. Between April 6th and the beginning of July, 1994 a genocide occurred that is easily one of the biggest disasters in the history of the civilized world. UNAMIR: The United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) was deployed during the time that peace talks were taking place. It was a Chapter 6 UN mission and was sent to keep the peace between the two rivaling groups, oversee government activities, and ensure safety until elections took place. The United Nations Observer Mission Uganda-Rwanda (UNOMUR) also played a role in the mission for Rwanda and they were treated as a Sector within UNAMIR. UNOMUR was stationed in Kabale, which was on the Ugandan side of the Uganda/Rwanda border opposite the area under RPF control; they were to monitor the flow of men, arms, and supplies from Uganda to the RPF in Rwanda. Their force consisted of MILOBs. A Chapter 6 mission mandate states: ââ¬Å"First of all, seek a resolution by negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort to regional agencies or arrangements, or other peaceful means of their choiceâ⬠. That was another major problem, because when the killing was going on the troops were not allowed to defend themselves because they were only there to enforce peace by negotiation and not by way of force, as stated by the mandate. The ROE also stated that the military personnel were to, ââ¬Å"Only fire when fired upon. â⬠UNAMIR was an ill-equipped, undermanned, and severely limited mission. The troops in Rwanda totaled 2ââ¬â¢584 people; they had virtually no means of transportation, very limited supplies, and very few weapons. Most of the equipment that they had was out-dated and virtually unusable. The mission had to put in requests for everything ranging from toilet paper to ammunition; much of which was never provided. This was a large part of what made UNAMIR a complete failure. There was a complete lack of attention to the mission in Rwanda and no country wanted to provide resources to help. The reason that they could get no reinforcements or supplies was because of the unwillingness of Western countries to contribute anything. The exception to that is Belgium, who contributed most of the troops that were deployed into Rwanda. The different countries around the world saw the mission in Rwanda as a sideshow to the other things that were going on, for example, in the former Yugoslavia, in Somalia, etc. This unwillingness and unconcern was what allowed the Genocide to occur and what facilitated the deaths of 800,000 people in Rwanda. Malcolm X is my hero because of the fact that when the world was divided because of race he stood up and made a difference! He proved that the American democracy was a dictatorship. He said that how can a democracy trash a complete race and enslave them for 300 hundred years! Malcolm X proved to the world that we are all humans despite our race. He gave another alternative other than killing. He crushed the racial differences in this world. He gambled in peace instead of war and he prevailed! He called for achieving equality by any means necessary. Malcolm X is a person worthy of people looking up to. People look at him for strength, wisdom and understanding. His footsteps are those that people may follow. His legacy will pass on through the generations to come. He is truly a legend, but not any legend, a legend that had a mission, but not any mission, a mission that will be honored a respected for rest of the human life. Malcolm X simply united the human race. Malcolm X was killed because he was right. He left The Nation of Islam to become a Sunni. He left it because The Nations teaching was contradicting to true Islam, and it did not have Godly wisdom. He got killed because he rejected Elijah Mohammads claim to prophet hood. He once said Whites can help us but cant join us. There can be no black-white unity until there is first some black unity. We can not think of being acceptable to others, until we have first proven acceptable to ourselves. This is so true because what happened proved to us that he was 100% right! Malcolm X will be respected through out the generations to come. He is a historian, a great teacher, a man of God, and a militant leader who was devoted to his commitments to fight racism wherever he found it.
